Jakarta, September 29, 2025 – The Indonesian government has stopped the free nutritious meal program in schools after more than 5,000 children were reported sick with food poisoning.
The mass poisoning case first happened last week in different areas. Many children felt stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, and dizziness after eating the free meals. Some of them had to go to the hospital. Parents were shocked and worried because the program was supposed to help their children become healthier, not sick.
After this case, many organizations and activists asked the government to pause the program. They said the food must be checked more carefully before it is given to the students. “Children’s safety must come first,” said one health activist, asking for stronger rules and control for food quality.
The free meal program was one of the biggest promises from President Prabowo Subianto. The government prepared around Rp160 trillion (about 10 billion US dollars) for this plan. The aim was to give good nutrition for children, reduce hunger, and fight stunting in Indonesia. The program was also expected to support local farmers and food suppliers.
But after the poisoning incident, people start to question if the program is ready. Some experts say the distribution system is not strong enough and the hygiene of food providers is still a big problem. They warn that if the program continues without serious changes, more accidents could happen.
The government explained that the pause is only temporary. The program will start again after investigation is finished and new safety measures are made. Officials said they will make stricter food inspections, new certifications for food providers, and more monitoring in the field.
For now, many schools are waiting for clear information about when the free meals will return. Parents also hope that in the future the program can really give safe and healthy food for their children.
