Monday, December 1 Sumatra, Indonesia — Devastating floods and landslides triggered by heavy tropical rains have struck multiple provinces on Sumatra island. As of 1 December 2025, the official death toll has reached 502 people. Rescue teams in western Indonesia continue to clear roads cut off by floods and landslides, as they battle to reach isolated communities and stranded residents.
Impact and Displacement
-
Thousands of homes and buildings have been submerged or destroyed across the affected region.
-
Many communities remain unreachable due to damaged infrastructure — including collapsed bridges and blocked roads — hampering aid delivery and rescue operations.
-
The number of missing persons remains high, complicating the death toll and relief efforts.
Rescue & Relief Efforts Underway
National authorities including BNPB (Indonesia’s Disaster Mitigation Agency) have mobilized military, volunteers and logistics support to deliver emergency supplies: food, clean water, medical aid, and temporary shelter. In some remote or cut-off areas, aid is being delivered via air or water routes as land access remains impossible.
Officials warn that the situation remains critical: heavy rain and unstable weather may still trigger more floods and landslides in the coming days.
